What We’re Up To

Rolling Out Our New Logo

Thanks to our invaluable partnership with the McMinnville Economic Development Partnership (MEDP) and their internship program, our most recent marketing intern, Henry Stahl, was able to create new logos for Swedemom Center of Giving and our affiliate Swedemom. We wanted to create a fresh new look and feel for those who interact with our brand often and give them an iconic image to look for when shopping with us. New logos have been long overdue as our old logos were created many years ago. As we are always working internally to perfect our model of giving, it was time our logos more accurately reflected our constant inner transformation. Now our "mascot" you could call it, the butterfly that reminds us that transformation is always possible, is front and center in these new designs. As we turn over a new leaf in our organizations, we invite you to do the same in your own life in a way that feels right to you.

Our Impact So Far In 2023

Our mission is to take donated goods and pass them on to other nonprofit and community organizations to help them serve their clients. This includes students in school, individuals struggling with homelessness or lack of resources, elderly folks in care facilities, single parents, and more. We even pass along items to animal shelters! So far in 2023, we have been able to make 50 deliveries, totaling hundreds of items, to our nonprofit partners by passing on your donations of desks, tables, chairs, beds, cooking items, warm clothes, school supplies, bedding, blankets, books, towels, appliances, TVs, lamps, and so much more. We have donated to organizations like YCAP, Provoking Hope, Share Inc, Henderson House, Juliette's House, McMinnville High School Resource Room, McMinnville Library, Lions Club, First Baptist Church, St. Barnabas Soup Kitchen, Lutheran Family Services, Project Able, City Outreach, Blanchet House, Serenity House, Encompass Yamhill Valley, and others. Thank you for your support in our mission of community support and sustainability! Know that your donations truly are making a difference in our community and in the lives of struggling individuals. We couldn't do it without you!

Volunteer Spotlight

The success of our organizations relies a lot on the help of volunteers. We recently had the pleasure of working with volunteers from Umpqua Bank and Duniway Middle School. The volunteers from the bank helped us by setting out new inventory at The Swedemom Store on 3rd Street and created new window displays to catch people's eye. They did a great job and we were glad to welcome new energy into the office. Thanks Umpqua Bank volunteers!

Duniway Middle School has helped us for a few years in a row now during their spring and fall service days as part of their school year. This time they were able to help us sort different types of media like books, CDs, cassettes, movies, and more. We always enjoy the chance to work with the younger generations as we benefit from their playful energy while getting to teach them about our mission and the importance of sustainability and community support. Thanks Duniway!

Meet our newest volunteer, Barbara Burr!

We are so happy to welcome our newest volunteer to the Swedemom team! Barbara has stepped in to assist our operations during a time that is needed most. She has done an amazing job so far helping us at The Swedemom Store organizing and creating new displays to attract customers to share our mission with them.

Thanks for being with us, Barbara!

What have you been involved in since volunteering with MacHub/ Swedemom?

"Most Thursdays I have been working on Holiday Displays for the Swedemom store. It's quite an exercise in creative design - working to make something attractive with just the items found in the store or the back room."

What made you volunteer with the company?

"I moved to McMinnville to be closer to family and to help out with our first grandchild. Well, 9 years later, she and her sister are busy, busy, busy and at school so I have been continuing to volunteer at my church and wanted to contribute to a completely different organization than I am used to helping out with."

What is your favorite part about volunteering here?

"I like the challenge of making something attractive to help increase potential sales! It's also fun to visit with staff members and customers who come in for the first time to see the store."

Where are you from originally?

"I have lived in the East and the West, but mainly grew up in a small town in New York state."

What is something interesting about you that not many people know?

"I love to help people with their genealogy quests for relatives. So far, I have 'reunited' three families who weren't expecting the mystery to be solved - ever!"

Get To Know Our Team

Meet our donation center expert, Mary Harrington-Fisher!

Mary has been the longest working employee for Swedemom and spends most of her time receiving donations from the community at our donation center at 1294 NW Highway 99W in McMinnville. "Mary has a servant's heart for all people. She emulates the spirit of Swedemom with her compassion and care for our donors, employees, and community," said Executive Director, Cami Nyquist. We are grateful for Mary and all she has done for our organizations over the years. This holiday season she will also be spending some Saturdays down at The Swedemom Store at 609 NE 3rd Street so make sure you stop by and say hello!

How long have you worked with MacHub/ Swedemom?

"I have worked for Swedemom/MacHub for a total of 11 years. 7 for Swedemom 2009-2016, 4 for the non-profit MacHub 2019-2023."

How did you get started with the company?

"I needed a job to support myself after the divorce from my first husband. A mutual acquaintance told me Cami needed help and I had some eBay selling experience so I called and interviewed and got the job."

What is your favorite part about working here?

"What I like, and love about the job is that I find all kinds of interesting things people have collected, such as antique and vintage glassware, old coins, stamps, artwork, handmade needlepoint, toys from my childhood or earlier, and I get to see these things go to new homes or be passed on for people who need them instead of going into the landfill. I also get to meet and know some of the donors on a first name basis and hear their stories about what they have donated."

Where are you from originally?

"I am originally from Florence, Oregon."

What is something interesting about you that not many people know?

"I think everyone I am close to knows that I collect wolf stuff. Even more interesting is I met my current husband while we were selling items at the local Saturday Market Swedemom booth."

Get Involved: Circular Monday

"Circular Monday was founded in 2017 in Malmö, Sweden, by the circular cloth-repair start-up, Repamera AB, and its founder Henning Gillberg (deceased March 2022).

They played 'the opposite game' with Black Friday and saw the need for a day that promotes circular consumption."

Circular consumption is a big part of what we do here at Swedemom Center of Giving and MacHub. Every day we take in donations from the community of usable household items they no longer need, and we either donate the items to organizations who need them to serve their clients or we sell them online to keep our operations running. By taking in material donations, we keep usable items out of the landfill and give them a new home and purpose. Many of the items we sell can also be used as DIY projects or can be repurposed or repaired, decreasing the need to buy new. May we all do our part this holiday season, and every day, to promote a circular economy by donating unused but still usable items instead of throwing them away, repairing broken items when possible, repurposing items instead of buying new, reusing instead of adding to the landfill, and sharing these ideas with the people around us. Consider shopping with us online here or here, or in person at 609 NE 3rd Street in McMinnville, Oregon, and support a circular economy not just on Circular Monday, but every day.

Earth Day is every day with Swedemom and MacHub.

"If you think the economy is more important than the environment, try holding your breath whilst you count your money."

Dr. Guy McPherson
